In the modern world, corporate governance protects more than investors’ interests. It also represents the public interest, through environmental and social standards and practices. Recent financial crises in the US and United Kingdom have created an even stricter regulatory environment.
Governance also applies to the public and third sectors, and scrutiny of public figures and public bodies is ever increasing, raising public expectations in terms of integrity and ethic behavior of leadership.
