Transformational Leadership is one of the most influential leadership theories of the 20th century, and its’ influence has been manifest in the development of many of the most widely used models and approaches to leadership and management employed worldwide today.
James MacGregor Burns first introduced the concept of transformational leadership in his 1978 publication, “Leadership.” McGregor Burns defined this approach to leadership as a process where “leaders and their followers raise one another to higher levels of morality and motivation.” In this, the transformational leader’s focus is directed towards the organization, and his or her behaviour builds follower commitment toward organizational objectives. In addition, transformational leaders encourage, inspire and motivate employees to innovate and create change that will help grow and shape the future success of the organization.
